Nicky Morgan, the culture secretary, has been loaned out to the media this morning and is pushing the line that the party is seriously concerned about Russian interference in the election.
This is based on the stories surrounding Reddit that the documents shared by Corbyn – exposing details of the meetings held with the US where the NHS and drug pricing were discussed – were first leaked onto the Reddit platform and originated from Russia.
Morgan told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that it was “extremely serious” that leaked documents could be linked to a Russian disinformation campaign.
I understand from what was being put on that website, those who seem to know about these things say that it seems to have all the hallmarks of some form of interference. And if that is the case, that obviously is extremely serious. And actually as culture secretary, obviously one of the things that we are looking for and monitoring is any interference in our elections.
Later this morning appearing on Sky News Morgan was asked why, if they were so concerned about Russian interference in the election process, had No 10 blocked the publication of a report examining the country’s infiltration in British politics. Note that we have never received anything close to an honest answer about this, ‘timing’ is the usual excuse but this has been fact checked at length and is blatantly a lie.
So obviously Morgan stuck with the lie and said it had been about ‘timing and the speed with which parliament had been dissolved’. “There hasn’t been a parliament to publish that report to,”.
All I can say is the government, obviously, is taking steps. We are very aware of the potential for overseas interference and watching very carefully through lots of different channels as to what potentially might be going on.
How bloody convenient, not having to release a document discussing how Russian’s buying access to senior members of the government – including Johnson himself – is a matter of grave concern and a risk to national security.
As I like to sometimes stare the obvious I shall do so now – this means we will get to see the contents of this document once the election has been wrapped up, and we won’t be able to a thing about it to get the Tories removed for another 5 years. And yes, my current prediction is a tiny Tory majority.
Imagine if Corbyn had sat on this document…
